Scale-up

Membrane separations only matter if they survive outside the lab. We work on the step between a coating on a coupon and a unit a plant can run.

What we work on

  • Lab-to-pilot progression, from single cells and coupons to multi-stack modules and pilot skids
  • Module and roll-to-roll fabrication that holds performance beyond bench coupons
  • Process simulation and separation-train design at plant throughput
  • Operating windows, solvent and catalyst recycle loops, and energy duty at scale

Plant and pilot-scale work

Bipolar membrane electrodialysis, lab cell to pilot skid

BMED carried from single-cell screening through bench multi-stack assembly to continuous pilot operation, producing lactic acid at about 110 kg/day and handling sodium sulfate streams above 100 kg/day. The pilot unit was built and is operated with the KRICT Carbon-Neutral Chemical Process Demonstration Center in Yeosu.
